The Dermacorder™ bioelectric field Imager is a hand-held, non-invasive instrument using a scanning sensor that detects the electric field in skin along with the surface topography without touching the skin. An integrated color video camera records the skin appearance and sensor position for each measurement as computer-controlled stepper motors move the sensor linearly over the skin while maintaining a constant distance from the skin’s surface. The horizontal step size is as small as 10 µm and the vertical step size is 0.75 µm. The surface potential profile and surface topography are displayed in real time on the computer screen and these data are stored along with the video images for further analysis.

Sensitivity is a function of the probe surface area. Using a circular probe 500 µm in diameter, a 10 mV voltage change is easily detected and electric field sensitivity in scanning mode is 30 mV/mm. Peak-to-Peak noise levels depend on amount of data smoothing but are typically on the order of 10 mV.
